Chapter Nine

Holding Bessie, Sarah watched Kent through the window. He was now stripped to the waist and she could scarcely drag her eyes away from him. He certainly was a fine specimen of manhood. His skin was lightly tanned, so obviously it wasn’t a stranger to the sun.

When he flung the door open, she gave a startled jump.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I’ve checked your well and it’s okay. There was a pile of sand on the lid, although I soon cleared it away.”

“I thought it would be okay because it’s fed by an underground stream, the same one that feeds water into those rock pools I told you about last night. If it dried up for any reason it would be the end of me living here. In summer there’s no other water.”

“You don’t have to worry, it’s fine. Your vegetable garden is ruined, though. I’m sorry, Sarah, I don’t think it will be repairable. I hope I’m wrong, yet fear that I’m not.”

“Is that all?”

“You have a bow in the roof of your barn. I’ll go there and clean the dirt off it. Fortunately, the cabin roof is sloped so there was no build up as everything slid off. Some of your cactus plants have been uprooted, trees and bushes stripped of their leaves; otherwise, considering the ferocity of the storm, you fared remarkably well in my opinion.”

Stepping on to the porch Sarah said, “I’m glad you were here with us, Kent. I would have been scared witless otherwise.”

“I doubt it. I’ve never met a woman braver than you. Well, I haven’t met many women at all to be honest, but you’re stronger and more resourceful than many men I have ever met.”

“You flatter me. I hear Bessie calling out. I’d better go to her. Just do the most important things for us. I know you’re anxious to leave and I don’t want to be responsible for holding you up.”

Swinging away she hurried inside so he wouldn’t see the tears building up in her eyes. She didn’t want him to go. Bessie would be distraught at his departure, too. There’s nothing more I can do to entice him to stay. I’ve told him I’ve got feelings for him and he brushed them away, she thought, and I’m not going to beg even if I thought it would do any good, which it wouldn’t. He had made up his mind and a man as strong-willed as Sheriff Kent wouldn’t change it, especially for a woman like her. Had she been beautiful maybe there might have been a chance. As it was…

“I’m coming, sweetheart.” Strange, how she hadn’t minded being alone here with just Bessie for company, now she knew it wasn’t enough. “It will have to be,” she muttered. “He doesn’t want to stay.”

She picked Bessie up and when the little girl wrapped her arms around her neck and placed sloppy kisses all over her face, Sarah knew she had no cause for complaint. She was the luckiest woman in all of Nevada and should count her blessings.
