Chapter Nine
Holding Bessie, Sarah watched Kent through the window. He was now stripped to the waist and she could scarcely drag her eyes away from him. He certainly was a fine specimen of manhood. His skin was lightly tanned, so obviously it wasnât a stranger to the sun.
When he flung the door open, she gave a startled jump.
âSorry, I didnât mean to frighten you. Iâve checked your well and itâs okay. There was a pile of sand on the lid, although I soon cleared it away.â
âI thought it would be okay because itâs fed by an underground stream, the same one that feeds water into those rock pools I told you about last night. If it dried up for any reason it would be the end of me living here. In summer thereâs no other water.â
âYou donât have to worry, itâs fine. Your vegetable garden is ruined, though. Iâm sorry, Sarah, I donât think it will be repairable. I hope Iâm wrong, yet fear that Iâm not.â
âIs that all?â
âYou have a bow in the roof of your barn. Iâll go there and clean the dirt off it. Fortunately, the cabin roof is sloped so there was no build up as everything slid off. Some of your cactus plants have been uprooted, trees and bushes stripped of their leaves; otherwise, considering the ferocity of the storm, you fared remarkably well in my opinion.â
Stepping on to the porch Sarah said, âIâm glad you were here with us, Kent. I would have been scared witless otherwise.â
âI doubt it. Iâve never met a woman braver than you. Well, I havenât met many women at all to be honest, but youâre stronger and more resourceful than many men I have ever met.â
âYou flatter me. I hear Bessie calling out. Iâd better go to her. Just do the most important things for us. I know youâre anxious to leave and I donât want to be responsible for holding you up.â
Swinging away she hurried inside so he wouldnât see the tears building up in her eyes. She didnât want him to go. Bessie would be distraught at his departure, too. Thereâs nothing more I can do to entice him to stay. Iâve told him Iâve got feelings for him and he brushed them away, she thought, and Iâm not going to beg even if I thought it would do any good, which it wouldnât. He had made up his mind and a man as strong-willed as Sheriff Kent wouldnât change it, especially for a woman like her. Had she been beautiful maybe there might have been a chance. As it wasâ¦
âIâm coming, sweetheart.â Strange, how she hadnât minded being alone here with just Bessie for company, now she knew it wasnât enough. âIt will have to be,â she muttered. âHe doesnât want to stay.â
She picked Bessie up and when the little girl wrapped her arms around her neck and placed sloppy kisses all over her face, Sarah knew she had no cause for complaint. She was the luckiest woman in all of Nevada and should count her blessings.
